Frequently Asked Questions

Orders (11)

If you don't know, we probably don't know either.

If your package was shipped via USPS, you should have received an email with the subject "GUE has sent you a package!" that contains a tracking number. US customers should see their tracking updated through delivery. International customers will see that their tracking information is updated until your package leaves the United States, at which time, it is up to the discretion of your national postal service whether to update it further. GUE does not have any more information than you do, and recommends calling your local post office if it has been more than 4 weeks since your order was shipped.

UPS provides updated tracking through delivery for US and International shipments.

Some postal services take longer than others to process items through customs. If there is anything we can do to make this process go more smoothly, please leave an order comment and we will be happy to oblige as best we can.

GUE has no control over what happens to an order once it leaves our office, and cannot take responsibility for lost merchandise orders that are the result of incorrect or incomplete addresses, mistranslation, inability to deliver, change of address, or postal service mishandling or loss. GUE is happy to provide any information about your package should you need to submit a claim to USPS, but we cannot undertake this process for you and cannot be responsible for following up on any claims made with USPS.

If you still have a question about your package, please email orders@gue.com.

If your merchandise order includes a tracking number, you will receive an email with that information when your package is shipped. It can take 24-48 hours for the tracking information to begin to be updated.

For international shipments via USPS Priority or USPS First Class, the USPS cannot update your tracking information after the package is transferred to your home country's postal service. Whether your tracking information will continue to be updated at all is entirely at the discretion of the postal service of your country. If you do not receive your package within 4 weeks of it leaving the U.S., please contact orders@gue.com.

GUE gear stickers are made by a 3rd party vendor local to GUE HQ and thus take time to order, receive, and ship. Stickers are ordered on or around the 1st and 15th of each month, depending on business hours, and should be ready to ship within two weeks.

GUE and its partner vendor will do the best we can with any special or non-English characters. We are generally able to accommodate any requested characters, but if you are worried about the spelling of non-English-alphabet names or words, please leave an order comment and we will be sure to ask our vendor to lend some extra attention to the accuracy of your stickers.

Any merchandise ordered online is shipped from our HQ in High Springs, Florida, USA. If you live outside of the United States we have to use international shipping, and aside from the $2.00 handling fee added to each merchandise order, there is absolutely no "padding" in the shipping fee you are charged.

The website estimates all shipping costs based on up-to-date prices and the combined weight of your merchandise. If the website overestimates your shipping costs, you will be refunded the difference in cost to the payment method used on your order, and you will receive an email explaining the refund. GUE HQ never seeks to profit in any way from shipping charges.

If you are looking for less expensive shipping options, there are a few that we suggest:

  • You can consider choosing USPS First Class Mail, which takes a bit longer but can cost significantly less (often $20-$30 less) for international orders. USPS First Class International shipping is now available as a selection in checkout if it qualifies, meaning your order weighs 4 pounds or less.
  • You can get together with other GUE divers in your area and place an order together, then split the shipping when you work out the individual costs among yourselves. This can be a very cost-effective way to get merchandise if you want a number of items and/or you know multiple other people who also wish to order merchandise from GUE HQ.
  • You can time your order with a dive trip you or a friend plan to take to the U.S., then have your items shipped to your temporary address or, if you are visiting High Springs, pick them up from GUE HQ. In order to make sure your items are in stock and can be shipped at the appropriate time to arrive during your travel window, we recommend placing orders no later than one month before your/your friend's arrival in the U.S. This gives us time to order and receive any out-of-stock items, and to time the shipment of your order accurately so that it arrives during your specified window. If you plan to use this method, as always, we suggest contacting GUE HQ's shipping representative at orders@gue.com as soon as possible to get the best possible results.
  • A final option is to see if there is a GUE Dive Center in your country or in a country closer to yours than the United States who sells the item you want to purchase. Please note that stock at GUE Dive Centers can be VERY limited and is chosen entirely at the discretion of the shop itself. They are under no obligation to fill orders they are not prepared for, and this is listed only as a resource for the convenience of our customers and the promotion of our officiap parenters. Dive Centers may choose to honor GUE Membership discounts, but they are not obligated to do so.

If you have any further shipping or merchandise questions, please email orders@gue.com.

Please contact orders@gue.com if you would like to have you order shipped with any method not available on our site automatically, such as UPS with Saturday Delivery, USPS Express Mail (domestic or international), etc. You will be provided with an estimate of the cost of your preferred method as soon as possible, and GUE HQ will help you complete your order as soon as payment information is provided.
Please contact info@gue.com with a full description of the sizes you might need and the specific items you are interested in ordering.
If, when you received your order, there were incorrect items included (example: you ordered a large t-shirt but received a medium), we will cover the shipping cost back to us, and the cost to send the correct item to you. If you find yourself in this situation, please email orders@gue.com.
If you placed an order for an item that you no longer want or wish to change (such as a size L to a size M), the first step is to contact HQ immediately at orders@gue.com to let us know your situation. If the incorrect item that you ordered has already arrived, then you will need to ship it back to GUE. As soon as we receive the item you wish to exchange, we will ship (at your expense) the replacement item. If the order has been shipped, but hasn’t yet arrived, you will need to wait until it does, and then follow the above step.

If you have placed your order within the last 48 hours, there is a chance it has not yet been shipped. In this case we can easily adjust the order to reflect your request. If you are unsure of the status of your order, please email orders@gue.com or call 1-800-762-DIVE (3483).

Please contact info@gue.com with as many details as possible about what you are looking for.
Our standard shipping method is USPS, and depending on the weight of your order, you will probably be able to choose from First Class (less expensive, but takes longer) or Priority (costs more, but usually arrives sooner). We also offer UPS, but this generally costs quite a bit more for international orders.

Classes (10)

No, GUE certification and membership are entirely separate designations. Anyone who fulfills the course prerequisites is eligible to take a GUE class.
GUE Fundamentals training is an immensely popular course, affecting the way many individuals think about scuba diving. Initially, GUE Fundamentals was structured to prepare divers for the rigors of technical diving and was established as a prerequisite for this training. However, most difficulty in diving relates to poorly developed fundamental skills; therefore, GUE began to promote this course to a broader community. Divers around the world have embraced this training as a way to greatly improve the safety and fun within their diving.

GUE Fundamentals may be conducted in a single tank for recreational divers; technical divers interested in advanced GUE training will use twin (double) tanks. To enter GUE Fundamentals, individuals must hold an Open Water rating from a recognized agency (most major agencies are acceptable). GUE training focuses on foundational skills, including theory and practical application of buoyancy, trim, teamwork, rescue skills, nitrox and other breathing gases, gas consumption, dive planning, equipment configuration, decompression theory, and more. GUE Fundamentals dives are video-recorded and used as a teaching tool to help improve diving skills.

You can learn more about GUE Fundamentals on its course page or in the GUE Standards.

The cost of a GUE class can vary, as GUE HQ does not set guidelines as to what instructors are required to charge. The only fee that we require to be paid directly to HQ is the registration fee, which gives you access to your class materials and allows you to apply for a class. This fee covers the cost of those materials, processing, and certification. This fee varies from $45 for non-certification classes (Doubles and Drysuit Primers) to $95 for foundational training (including GUE Fundamentals and the Recreational Diver track) to $150 for advanced training (including the Cave Diver and Technical Diver tracks).
The registration fee charged by GUE HQ is separate from any course fees charged by your instructor and covers the cost of materials, processing, and certification. It is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

This fee varies based on the class you are taking:
  • $45 for Doubles or Drysuit Primer (no certifications), Gas Blender, and Triox, Navigation, and Rescue Primer.
  • $40 for GUE Fundamentals Part 1 and Recreational Supervised Diver to Rec 1 Upgrade
  • $55 for GUE Fundamentals Part 2 and Recreational Supervised Diver
  • $95 for GUE Fundamentals, Recreational Diver 1, 2, and 3, Documentation Diver, DPV 1, DPV Cave, Cave Sidemount, Underwater Cave Survey, Scientific Diver, and Photogrammetry Diver.
  • $125 for CCR1, CCR 2, CCR Cave, and PSCR Diver.
  • $150 for Cave 1 and 2,  Tech 1 and 2.
The first step towards registering for a GUE class is to verify with your instructor that there is a spot reserved for you. GUE HQ (and thus our website) does not substitute for direct communication with the instructor concerning class availability.

The next step is to create a free account on GUE.com and complete your Student Profile, located under the My Account menu. Once you have done this, you can find the class you want to take by selecting the "Find GUE Classes" button on the Diver Training menu. Once you find the class you wish to sign up for, you will be prompted to pay the registration fee. Successful payment of the registration fee applies you for the course, and both you and your instructor will receive an email confirmation.

Check to make sure that you have entered something in every field. If you have left anything blank, your form will not be processed. Once you have made sure that there are no blank fields and it still shows as incomplete, please contact info@gue.com.

GUE offers a wide variety of high quality, comprehensive scuba classes, ranging from recreational open water training to advanced technical and cave diving. GUE courses include:

The structure of GUE training can be found on the Explore GUE Courses page, which includes links to more extensive course descriptions.

For the most up-to-date and complete descriptions, including prerequisites, topics, required skills, and equipment, you should always review the current version of GUE Standards.

Because of GUE’s continuous growth, our Instructors can be found all over the world. To find an instructor in your area, visit our instructor page. Can’t find one close to you? Don’t worry! Many of our instructors are flexible and willing to travel. For more details, visit the instructor’s resume page by clicking on their name.
We're so glad that you're interested in GUE training but, no, you cannot undertake GUE training while you still use these items. E-cigarettes, vape pens, shisha, hookah, etc. all fall under GUE's no-smoking policy. Once you have discontinued use of these items, we'd love for you to join a GUE class!
Underwater training videos or photos taken during class can only be used during that particular class for training purposes, and they must be deleted after training is complete . No students, instructors, or instructor candidates may retain this content post-class. However, there is some flexibility with other content captured during the course, so please review GUE's official policy below.

Official Training Photo/Video Policy

  1. Training imagery (video or photo) recorded underwater and during class must be focused on student learning and refining performance. These recordings are not to be used outside of the class setting and are to be deleted after training is completed.
  2. Non-training imagery (video or photo) recorded underwater may be taken after all training and evaluation is complete. In this case, all divers joining the dive must be informed and agree to public use of the imagery.
  3. Training imagery (video or photo) recorded above water may be released publicly under the condition that consent is given by the course instructor and all represented participants.
Digital certification cards are accessible from your My Courses & Cards page for the duration that the card is valid. Once your certification expires, the digital card link becomes deactivated, though the certification itself is still verifiable via the Verify Certification page. If/when a certification is renewed, the digital card is immediately reactivated.
Students seeking to upgrade from a Recreational Fundamentals pass to a Technical pass are not required to pay the registration fee again and should be able to apply for additional Fundamentals or Fundamentals Upgrade courses without being prompted for payment. Given this, Rec to Tech upgrade certification cards are not printed automatically, but instead require a $30.00 fee. This fee is available here, but will also be email to you after the course.
GUE divers are required to perform twenty-five dives at their highest level of certification over the three-year period to re-qualify for an additional three-year period. To renew, simply visit your “My Courses” page where you will find a link to access the renewal form. Once the renewal form is complete, you will be prompted to pay the $30.00 renewal fee. Once submitted, HQ will receive notification of the renewal, and upon review will process it accordingly.

If you choose to pay to renew your certification at the same time as placing a merchandise order, please note that for quality assurance purposes, these orders are handled separately, and your certification card will not be included in the same package as your merchandise order, unless you leave an order comment specifically requesting that one be held until the other is ready to ship.

When you have filled out your QC form via your “My Courses & Cards” page AND your instructor has entered your course evaluation, your certification will be placed in the print queue and normally processed in 1 week or less. You will receive email notifications both when your card is placed in the queue and when it has been mailed. If you have not already done so, verify that your contact information on the Student Information page of your Student Profile is correct to ensure timely delivery.

If you haven’t received your card 4-6 weeks after your class is over (international mail can take up to 4-6 weeks for delivery) and have filled out your QC form and updated your contact information, then please contact certifications@gue.com.
Please email HQ at certifications@gue.com or call 1-800-762-DIVE (3483) with any questions or concerns about your certification.
To request a replacement card, please go to your My Courses page and there you will find a Certification Card Replacement link. Once you complete the form and submit the $30.00 replacement fee, we will receive your request and process it as quickly as possible. Do not submit this request if the card you need is expired or will expire in 6 months or less. Instead, submit the Certification Renewal request from your My Courses page.
If your certification is new, once your instructor has entered your evaluation and you have submitted the QC form, you can access a digital copy of your card from your My Courses & Cards page.

If you do not have your certification card, either because you haven’t received it, have lost it, realized it needs to be renewed, or forgot it when traveling, please contact info@gue.com or 1-800-762-DIVE (3483) and provide all of your pertinent information. We will do everything we can to help resolve your issue based on the circumstances surrounding your request.

If you haven’t received your card yet, please be sure you have filled out your QC form. Please note that if a card is requested to be sent any other method than USPS First Class, you will be required to cover the shipping cost.

A provisional rating means that you didn’t fail a course, but you still have skills to work on before you are evaluated as “Pass,” and are eligible for official GUE certification. Any Active status GUE instructor in the appropriate curriculum can conduct an upgrade evaluation. The time and fees associated with provisional upgrades are entirely at the discretion of the instructor; however, HQ does requires you to pay for course registration again if the time since the original course has exceeded 6 months, but a discount is available. Please contact HQ for more information.
Annual auto-renewal is an optional selection you can make at the time you purchase a GUE Membership. If you select annual auto-renewal, your GUE Membership charges and benefits will recur each year on the same date as your original order. Additionally, you can receive a 10% discount on your first year if you sign up for annual auto-renewal.
No, GUE certification and membership are entirely separate designations. GUE is a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit organization that is entirely supported by memberships, sales, and donations. GUE is also a vibrant international community, and we highly encourage all of our divers to explore our membership options and choose the level that best suits them.

GUE Membership offers a number of benefits, depending on the level, all of which are listed and up-to-date on our membership page.

Free registration discounts for Gold and Platinum members are automatically applied at checkout, but please contact us right away if this feature doesn't appear to be working. If you are a Gold member and would like to save your two free registrations for courses other than what you are registering for at the time, please contact info@gue.com and we will assist you with billing to ensure your free registrations remain active for future courses.

This membership benefit can only be used during the one-year period of the membership with which it is associated. No membership benefits may be rolled over, banked, or in any way valid more than one year after purchase of a membership, even if it is renewed without interruption.
For example, you cannot redeem three free course registrations after renewing the Gold membership you have had for one year already.

Additionally, free course registration benefits cannot be applied to registrations purchased before the period of membership. These rules apply to all levels of membership that grant free registrations (Gold and Platinum). If this conflicts with your training plans, remember that course registrations are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase, and registration fees can be purchased independently from course application. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact GUE HQ.

Becoming a GUE Member is quick and easy, and can be done entirely online.
GUE offers a range of membership levels to suit any budget. To view the various levels and their benefits, please visit our membership page here.
Users with an active membership have the option to move to a higher level membership for a special upgrade price. Upgrading works just like purchasing a new membership—it is active for one year from the purchase date and includes all listed benefits of the membership.
If you have an active membership, visit www.gue.com/membership to review the available membership levels and to make your selection. Once you have added the new membership to your shopping cart and proceeded to checkout, an automatic discount will be applied. If this feature does not appear to be working, please contact us right away.
The Quest mailing list is used very infrequently, but if you are confident that you have missed a recent message, there are several possible reasons why you are not receiving Quest list emails. First, is your membership still active? If not, then you can renew here. If your membership is active, is your email’s spam filter blocking the incoming messages? If it is, check your filter’s settings. If neither of these are the problem, please contact info@gue.com, and we will verify your subscription.

Version 3 had a few bugs (i.e., incorrect implementation of the on/off-gassing models) that were fixed in the release of version 4. The majority of these fixes will in some cases result in differences of around 1-1.5% of the dive time. However, one of the corrections can alter the result a bit more. This applies to the rate of helium off-gassing during a surface interval. If you plan repetitive dives with helium, any decompression plan following the surface interval will likely be shorter in version 4 compared to version 3. With this in mind, if you are used to planning repetitive dives in version 3, you would need to increase the conservatism for the repetitive dive in version 4 to achieve the same level of gas loading that you are used to.

Yes, repetitive dives are now supported through the "Logbook" section, which you will find in the main menu.
To plan a repetitive dive, tap the large + sign to plan your first dive. Then return to the Logbook page, where you will see an entry for the current day with the first dive listed under this day. To plan a second ("repetitive") dive, tap the smaller + sign on the day entry. This will open up a new planning page, where you will now find a "Surface Time" tab to the left of the active "Levels" tab. Enter your surface interval here, and then plan your repetitive dive as usual in the "Levels" tab.

Since macOS Catalina, Windows emulators such as WineSkin have been troublesome for most users. Would you still like to give it a try, carefully follow the steps here.  Or, better yet, please upgrade to DecoPlanner 4, which is macOS native.
Yes. Once you have installed the DecoPlanner, please see the Help menu in the program. The Help section explains how to use the program.
PDF books are downloadable files, accessible from the My Files option on your My Account menu. Software download files are also available on this page.
Most of the books can be opened using Mac Preview and other PDF viewers, but all can be opened using Adobe Reader, a free download available here: Get Adobe Reader
The link to download purchased software remains active for 6 months. If something happens to your computer during this time period, simply re-download the program from the My Files option on your My Account menu. If you need replacement software more than 6 months after purchase, you are entitled to obtain a 50% discount from the current purchase price of the product in question; please contact info@gue.com with proof of purchase to obtain your discount. This replacement offer is not valid when a new version of software has replaced the software in question. In this case, the customer is able to purchase the new product at the discounted upgrade price.

Please note: When you buy a software program from GUE you will download it as a ZIP archive. This ZIP archive contains the program installer, and it is very important that you keep this file in a safe place. We highly recommend that you save the file to an external memory device such as a USB drive, CD/DVD, or external hard drive, so that in the event of a computer crash or theft, you will not need to re-purchase your software.

About GUE (2)

We are thrilled you're interested in supporting GUE. This support can take many forms, including membership, direct donations, or support of one of GUE's many projects and conservation initiatives. You can learn more by visiting our page on supporting GUE!
Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) www.globalunderwaterexplorers.org is a nonprofit organization formed by leading explorers, researchers, and educators; these individuals are dedicated to the training of divers as well as the study and protection of the aquatic realm. GUE and its associated projects are responsible for conducting some of the world’s most remarkable dives, setting numerous world records in the process. The success of this group encouraged great interest in their diving and procedures. Of particular interest is the promotion of solid fundamental skills for all divers (recreational and technical) as well as their adherence to a common diving standard. This general standard requires the following:

  • Divers use the same equipment configuration; this enhances safety and efficiency.
  • Divers use the same well-defined set of breathing gases, including nitrox, helium and oxygen; standard mixes eliminate complexity and greatly enhance safety.
  • Divers use a team approach during all dives, facilitating fun and safety.
  • Divers must have a solid grasp of fundamental diving skills, including refined buoyancy, trim, and teamwork; these skills must be developed in concert with the type of diving being pursued. Difficult dives require very high levels of skill development.

Over time it became obvious that divers experiencing difficulty on advanced dives and during technical training were suffering from poorly developed fundamental skills. Among other deficiencies, basic skills were lacking, including good buoyancy control, efficient propulsion techniques, and effective gas sharing techniques; this was true despite the fact that applicants were often experienced divers. Consequently, the founders of GUE attempted to shift the industry away from quantity and toward a focus that insisted upon greater capacity from motivated individuals. Over time it became apparent that too many factors were discouraging migration to longer more demanding instruction. Profit-driven forces coupled with general inertia encouraged the persistent reduction of diver training requirements. As a nonprofit education, research, conservation, and exploration agency, Global Underwater Explorers appeared better situated to encourage robust training; ultimately this emphasis led to the expansion of GUE’s diver training division.
GUE does not do any crossover instructor training. All GUE instructors must follow the GUE certification and instructor training process. GUE's curriculum can differ significantly from that used by other agencies and thus does not allow for effective "crossover" instruction. This policy does not differ based on the type or level of instructor you are or wish to become.
The full outline of GUE instructor development can be found in the GUE Standards document. A more detailed explanation can be found in Quest 16.2, in Dr. Panos Alexakos's article Becoming an Entry Level GUE Instructor: the Two Signature Process. Of course, if you have any questions don't hesitate to contact info@gue.com or a GUE Instructor Trainer or Evaluator.
